What is the future of sustainability? The UAE is holding many initiatives to promote sustainability such as developing sustainable schools, hotels, and innovation centers in Dubai’s Sustainable City.
In the past few years, the issue of climate change has captured the world’s attention. It is an on-going phenomenon that has impacted our world in a long-term manner. The climate change issue has become an issue to many parties: political, environmental, and cultural. Climate change is an alteration in the Earth’s average weather conditions, in which there are more extreme conditions than the normal.
Anthropologists study climate change, they examine the different forms of it, the reasons that they occur, and the different factors of this phenomenon. There are numerous forms of climate change, ranging from floods to droughts to greenhouse effects.
Furthermore, the reasons that those climate change conditions occur are both natural and man-made, though both harmful, but the man-made ones can be acted on better. Before industrialization came into place, many people resorted to natural ways of living, which had minimal impacts on the environment. However, when industrialization diffused through the world, carbon emissions drastically increased, resulting in pollution and harm to the Earth’s ozone layers.
For this reason, anthropologists holistically study the issue of climate change to come up with ways to deal with the problem. Since climate change is a global problem, anthropologists study it to come up with unified solutions to address these issues. However, different countries have different approaches to unravel solutions, which is why anthropologists attempt to understand the differences and similarities in cultures so that they can in turn find the most adequate approach to the issue of climate change.
For the past few years, the world has been shifting to a more “green” and environmentally sustainable orientation with regards to different product offerings. The UAE is no exception: The Masdar Institute is one of the most prominent examples of a “green” city. However, that is not it for the UAE.
It was recently announced that Dubai is planning to launch an environmentally sustainable school located in Sustainable City in 2017. Similar to Masdar Institute, Sustainable City will be the Dubai’s first energy efficient and fully integrated sustainable community, which will also include a sustainable innovation center and hotel.
The aim of the school is to convert the warm weather of the UAE to a naturally ventilated, cooled environment. The initiative takes the element of environmental sustainability further, in which students can grow their own fruits and vegetables for their own consumption.
Projects like these definitely help with the environment. These are man-made solutions to help improve the issue of climate change. Man-made inventions are not black and white. It’s how individuals and corporations use these solutions to fill the gray area with regards to the issue of climate change. Having a “green” school is definitely important because it can educate the new generation in the context of the environment they live in. There is also a synergy between the idea of a sustainable school and teaching the new generation the importance of implementing both individual and group changing for a safer environment.
