Embedding Social Responsibility in Children Through Storytelling

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Think of a mound of clay. It is still, unshaped, and blank. The pottery end-work would exist as the outcome of the processes of molding that the clay had to undergo. Similarly, children are born into this world with a blank slate. It is essential to embed a sense of social responsibility within their mindset from a young age, allowing them to consciously consider and sympathize with the perspectives of those around them. Through the following books by Sail Publishing, children are presented with stories that allow them to cultivate their curiosity and imagination while grasping concepts that allow them to attain a sense of social responsibility.

Within Ma Heya Mehnat Ommy, a little girl endeavors to figure out her mom’s occupation. She reflects on her mother’s belongings and attempts to guess the possible professions. After using her imagination to explore several options, the little girl infers that despite what her mother does for a living, she rests assured that it wouldn’t surpass the joy she attains from spending time with her!

Within Saif Swims in Space, children can learn the story of Saif from the perspective of his younger sister. The story depicts that while Saif’s (who has Down Syndrome) abilities and needs may differ from those of his sister’s and other children around them, it does not belittle him in any shape or form. We are presented with the wide extent of Saif’s hopes and dreams, represented by the scope of outer space. Through his different yet equally strong skillset, Saif ventures into outer space by achieving his dream of becoming a Special Olympic swimmer!

Within Al Aswat Al Sameta, Noora goes on a journey of understanding her deafness and growing to embrace it. At first, she feels a sense of imposition by seeing everyone around her communicate through speaking and not being able to understand or partake in it herself. However, she realizes that she has formed unique ways to connect with the things that she loves in different ways with time. Her other senses are heightened and represent her strength in uniqueness. She learns to embrace her difference and realizes that our differences play a role in constituting our strengths!

Within Sir Al Ibtisama, we explore Bakhit’s journey and relationship with his community. Within social settings and amongst his associates, Bakhit chooses to avoid certain situations. As a consequence of his actions, community members perceive Bakhit to be arrogant and condescending. However, when confronted by a friend, we are presented with the reasoning behind Bakhit’s actions- being his poor financial status. Allowing readers to understand that contexts don’t always exist as they may seem, emphasizing the importance of obtaining a sense of understanding and tolerance to those around us.

Whether it’s learning how to interact with those around us, embracing every individual’s differences, or learning to understand different circumstances of those around us regardless of experiencing them ourselves, valuable interpretations can be attained through reading the stories, allowing children to develop a better sense of social awareness and responsibility!
