Our lives consist of a very complex cycle of ups and downs. It’s only natural to undergo moments that exist as a part of both- life’s positive and negative aspects. For Ban Lahham and Ziad Gadou, a sense of reflection of life’s upliftment and dejection is presented through their poetry within their works Enigma and Provoke. While facing difficult occurrences may possibly impose a sense of despair on individuals, it is important to highlight that reflecting on such experiences plays a crucial role in our ability to learn and grow throughout them.

Within Enigma, readers can understand as well as potentially relate to the author’s hardships, which she represents through her writing. The poetry unfolds the depths of pain that occurs within love. Aching, disappointment, expectations, ideals that become futile plans, and letting go are all phases portrayed and dissected throughout the poems. A large part of overcoming such struggles is learning how to release the emotions correlated with them. Through comprehending the writing within Enigma, readers attain a sense of understanding of the emotional release that occurs throughout the poetry.

Represented by its title, Provoke delivers sharp explanations of the author’s thought processes and reflections on various aspects of his life. Through the art of poetry, the author is able to coherently describe and express dark and low instants, while unfolding the growth and development that occurs throughout them. It provides a raw insight into the author’s thoughts, allowing readers to comprehend the depth of his poetry, and provoking them to reflect on their own experiences as a result.

One of the most prominent themes within Provoke is the author’s reflection on his Arab roots and culture. Through which we can attain an understanding of reality parallel to representation. He also provides his perspective on the general standards of society that we live in. He also presents sophisticated claims of criticism towards social structures, which can be demonstrated through the following line of poetry: Discrimination is a cultural abomination unless it widens the gap of economic salvation.

To have our hardships articulated in a form that we can declaim and comprehend, while being able to form a sense of strength through relating to other people’s experiences allows us to better understand and overcome them. To grasp the underlying meanings behind metaphors and poetic devices, is to escape into what feels like a mystic realm, by allowing us to deeply connect with our thoughts and emotions. To reflect on the words of Provoke and Enigma, is to be able to experience that, and so much more.
